Finishing up 2008

When last I left you I was sitting at home on the Saturday before Christmas, with my flight rescheduled for a day later.  I already had my trip knitting packed away, so I decided to start some VERY last minute Christmas presents.  Here are some very cozy cozies.  I based them off of two patterns and my own.

Basically all of them have 20 stitches across, were knitted for about 40 rows, and were then grafted together to make the cable pattern seamless.

It was really exciting teaching myself how to graft cables.  I have only ever grafted the end of toes on socks, where each stich is a knit stitch, but I used my smarts and figured out how to reverse for purl stitches.  It was great.

Next in the adventure was getting back to Wisconsin.  My flight left Monday, after some delay, and I think it was the only flight leaving PDX that day.  I made it to Atlanta for my connection, but then had some issues there.  My Milwaukee flight was cancled, and I was maybe not going to get out of Atlanta for another day.  I finally on Monday night very late got on a flight to Chicago and my Dad and Joel came and picked me up and we got home at 2am.  My suitcase even showed up Tuesday morning at 9am!

Some of the fun while home was getting some Hanukkah latkes.  Say hi Margaret!

We also went and visited our favorite sushi restaurant and LYS, which is a common outing for My Mother-in-law, sister-in-law and I, and then we drag Joel with because he loves sushi and doesn’t mind the yarn store.  Rachel found a new favorite object and we had so much fun holding the hot little baby for the rest of the day.

After spending time with Joel’s family we went and spent time with mine.  I made my Dad these mittens for his birthday back in August before I started the blog, so here is their introduction to the world.  He cracks me up because he wanted nice warm wool mittens for his birthday like his grandma used to make, so I made him some, and now he hasn’t used them because he is afraid of wrecking them.  I told him wearing them while working in the snow will make them better because they will start to felt, and he was not so sure about that.

Lots of fun was had with my parents new kitten Lily.  She is about 6 months now, but still pretty tiny and full of energy.

Watch out, I am going to get you!

Over the course of the Holiday at various locations with various people there was many a game of The Settlers of Catan played.

CATAN!

There was lots of snow, but once I got to Wisconsin it didn’t really get in the way of anything.  The typical piles everywhere, but the midwest has more than 15 snow plows for a major city, so it was all ok.  Driving actually went really well.  The drive back to Portland was surprisingly uneventful.  There was a storm overnight when we stopped in Bozeman, MT which was nice because we were stopped.  It has snowed more since we have gotten back, but nothing as bad as what had happened before Christmas.  I am so glad that we made it back safe and sound.

I finished up more projects while away.

Pauls scarf

Paul's scarf

Paul’s scarf was almost too easy.  10 1/2 needles, “I love this yarn” acrylic worsted from Hobby Lobby, 24 stiches, knit in 2×2 rib, changing colors every 24ish rows.  Done!

Johns mittens

John's mittens

John’s mittens were another patten I totally made up as I was going.  I am very pleased with how they turned out, and they fit him great. I especially love the cable patten I put into them.

I finished my tea cozy that was many months hibernating.

I followed this pattern.  I really liked the pattern, except I did not want a big pouf on the top so I just ended it early, so the top of the teapot is still accessable.  The yarn is Elann Peruvian Highland Wool and I really like it.  Overall I am very happy with the result, glad it is done, and wish I would have finished it earlier.

Oh, and last but not least, yesterday John decided he wanted to learn how to crochet.  Mocha was helping him.  It went well, we will see if it continues.

I am hoping that in the next few days I can detail some fun new things I got for gifts!  There is quite a bit of wonderfulness, I am really excited, and I hope you are too!
