Garden Party

Ok, I know it is not nice to brag, but I must say the weather in Portland this weekend was frickin’ unbelievable!  I love Portland!  70 and sunny!  (And I hear back in Wisconsin there are snow showers, ouch, sorry guys!)

So, to brag more about my warm and sunny weekend I will tell you all about what I did!  I had heard ads on the radio that Freddies was having a sale on Fushia plant starts (one of my most favorite summer flowering plants) and then they mentioned something about free potting.  Huh.  Well, this girl loves Fushia and loves a good deal, so I got up bright and shiny early Saturday morning to make it to Fred Meyer at 9:00 when this madness started.  Apparently I did not get the memo that you could start early!  They were indeed potting for free, and there were many ladies in line already getting their plants all potted up.  Since I knew what I wanted I headed straight there.  Now, I don’t know if it is because of the warmer climate, but there were a million varieties of Fushia to choose from.  How’s a girl to pick?  But seriously, there were at least a dozen that I counted.  So, I ended up going a little crazy and bought 20 starts!  They were 5 for $3 people!  Then, I needed some hanging baskets, which were buy 2 get 1 free!  Score!  So I bought my fushia and pots and went and got in line for potting.  Free dirt!  Yay!  It was great.  I ended up with 6 hanging baskets (where they will go, I don’t know yet).  But there were 2 lonely Fushia left over from putting 3 in each.  So, I offloaded the baskets into the car and went back because in my frenzy to buy and get in line I forgot there were other things I needed.  Since basically everything was buy 2 get 1 free I got my tomato poles and bamboo for making my pea trellis and some seeds I had forgotten previously, and then I grabbed another pot with a Stock plant for the 2 lonely Fushia.  So I was off again to stand in the potting line.  How nice it was to not have to buy 2 big bags of soil to plant all these lovely flowers!

So when I got home my landlord was hard at work on the yard that he had rototilled.  Yeah, the entire yard was rototilled.  Seriously.  The good thing about this is I get vegetable gardens!  Last weekend the landlord and I went to Home Depot to pick out bushes for the front yard and buy wood for the raised beds.  I have been antsy to get them started, so since it was such a beautiful day I figured nows as good a time as any!

I had these boxes together lickety split.  A few problems by the fence trying to drive the 2×2s into the cement posts the poles are set into, darn it!  But overall I am really proud of my work!  They are even level!  Check out my handy work!

Boy, and I am dang sore from all this!  All the cutting and then pounding the 2×2s into the yard, oy!  I am a bit on the sore side today.  Plus I was worried I was going to get sunburned since I hadn’t thought to put any sunscreen on being April and all.  I am so happy with how the beds turned out.  The landlord is going to go in with some neighbors on a truckload of dirt so I calculated for him how many yards we would need.  Yay for vegetables!  Speaking of vegetables, check out how far they have come!

I am just itching to get planting so these things can flourish!  Oh, and one other thing, the kitties love the warm weather too!
