The Mad Hatter

DSC05238

Awesome!

A few weeks ago one of my good friends asked me if I would make him a wool cap. Something to keep his head warm through the winter. I totally owe him for driving me to the airport last winter at 4 am in the middle of a blizzard. Plus, I thought it would be an awesome challenge.

Well, I found some great dark grey wool in my dresser o’ fabric, leftover from when I made myself some wool pants (that did not turn out especially great).

He wanted the hat pretty thick so I decided to fuse the wool into two layers for a nice thick layer. By the way, fusing wool together takes a lot of heat and time. Just a little heads up.

I have a few hats like this, so I used them as a plan to help me figure out a pattern. I ended up buying some pretty thick stabilizer that I put into the brim to help it stand up.

Once I got the brim done, the rest went together pretty fast. I was actually quite surprised by the lack of roadblocks in the construction.

Many hats of this style are pieced with many components that make up the sides of the hat, but I decided that the more pieces I used, the more chance I had of making it sloppy. So I decided to just go with one large band and then I topstitched around it twice to give some construction type lines for interest.

Not every line is completely perfect in stitching, but it is handmade and by someone who has never constructed a fitted hat of this nature before, so I am pretty dang proud of it.

I decided to add a silk band on the inside edge to clean it up and keep the wool off of sensitive skin around the face. I hand-stitched it in to keep it more invisible from the outside.

It is actually on its way to its new home right now with Joel (at a late night Kung Fu movie) so I can not wait to hear how it fits and how the owner likes it. I am hoping he is all smiles, because if not, I got a lot of work to redo. Or maybe I will just keep it for myself and start from scratch….it did look pretty cute on me…..
