Lots of knitting time!

Merry Christmas Cactus! This is its first Christmas and it is blooming already!

So this great guy named Santa came to my house Thursday night and left me yarn (among other things), how did he know? And it was exactly what I wanted (maybe because I bought it?) and I had to get to work right away!

This is the yarn, 2 skeins of New England Highland Wool. It is wool wool, definitely not a merino or something, but I wanted something thick that would wear well. It is Aran weight, and a nice off-white color. I wanted to make gloves that match my new winter coat with pretty buttons. We got up, found the stockings full, and I set to winding the yarn into balls and swatched. I then cast on 48 stitches each for 2×2 ribbing.

We were off to Christmas brunch, but then I got back to knitting and knit the entire time we went and watched Sherlock Holmes. I then knit while at Dinner with other friends, while waiting for dinner and after dinner while playing games. By the time I went to bed I had 4.5″ of ribbing and enough on the hands to divide for the thumbs.

Yesterday I knit on and off and ended up with most of the fingers knit. Then today, finished them off. What do you think?

What do you think? I made them right and left handed as to get a perfect fit. I hate when the fingers are not long enough, cuffs too short, and the thumb twists the whole thing. And what a great match for my new coat with its beautiful buttons! (Did I mention I sewed them on to replace the ugly black plastic ones it came with?)

Some other knitting going-ons are I received a whole bunch of grey yarn and a new book in the mail this week! I am making a fair isle circular yoke cardigan so I can try steeking!

The colored yarn is from Knitted Wit and the grey is from Knit Picks. The doubled colored fingering weight is a perfect match for a single strand of the swish worsted weight. I knit this swatch from the yarn and washed and dried it to measure for calculating the sweater dimensions.

I have also started thinking about the pattern using this new book Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting. There are so many options!!!

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas!
